RADIO IOWA: Verification code added to temporary tags on newly-purchased vehicles

Temporary paper license plates on newly purchased vehicles in Iowa are now digitized. The cards are displayed inside the rear window of a vehicle and indicate the owner has submitted paperwork to the Iowa Department of Transportation to register the vehicle.

As of Jan. 1, auto dealers are issuing cards that can be scanned by law enforcement officers. Each card includes a unique number issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation, allowing officers to verify vehicle ownership and registration.

A general manager at a Sioux Center dealership said the change has brought peace of mind to customers who were concerned about being stopped in another state and unable to prove they had purchased the vehicle…
