Krewe Of Barkus Sets Sail With Nautical Dog Parade In Downtown McKinney

Pirate pups, deckhand dachshunds and sea-loving spaniels are taking over downtown McKinney this winter as the 24th annual Krewe of Barkus returns on Feb. 15. This year’s theme, “Dogs Going Overboard: Barkus Sails the Seven Seas,” invites four-legged revelers and their humans to dress in nautical, pirate and ocean-inspired costumes for an afternoon of family-friendly celebration.

A Parade With Paws And Personality

The festivities begin at 12:30 p.m. at Dr. Glenn Mitchell Memorial Park, located just west of McKinney’s historic downtown square. Before the parade, guests can browse pet-focused and general vendors and enjoy the lively pre-parade atmosphere.

At 2 p.m., the parade officially steps off, sending hundreds of costumed dogs and their owners marching through Historic Downtown McKinney in true Mardi Gras style.

Creativity is strongly encouraged, with awards presented in several categories, including best in show, most creative, best dog-owner combo, best group and best use of theme. From full pirate crews to ocean-inspired ensembles, the parade is known for its playful competition and standout costumes.

More Than A Parade

Patterned after the original Krewe of Barkus parade in New Orleans, the McKinney event includes more than just the procession. Attendees can enjoy vendor booths, a Pawty in the Park and opportunities to meet animals in need of a forever home through on-site adoption partners.

How To Join The Fun

Dog and float registration is $5 per entry, with online registration available through Feb. 14. The event is free to attend, making it an easy outing for families, pet lovers and anyone looking to soak up a little Mardi Gras spirit…
