11 arrested in connection with marriage fraud, bribery conspiracy: DOJ

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WFLA) — Eleven people have been indicted in connection with their alleged roles in a federal marriage fraud conspiracy case.

According to the Department of Justice, the following individuals engaged in a conspiracy to recruit U.S. citizens and have them enter into sham marriages with Chinese nationals to evade immigration laws and obtain residency:

The DOJ reports the sham marriages occurred around the country, including Jacksonville, New York, Connecticut and Nevada.

To give the illusion of the marriages being legitimate, photos of the couples were taken to create evidence that could be presented to immigration authorities.

According to DOJ, the conspirators had agreed to a payment plan where the U.S. citizen spouse would receive a cash payment up front for marrying the Chinese national. A second payment would be distributed when legal immigration status was obtained, and a final payment would be issued after the divorce…
