Regina schools cancel classes Thursday and Friday due to illness outbreak

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Regina Catholic Schools in Iowa City has cancelled all classes and activities Thursday, Feb. 6 and Friday, Feb. 7 due to an “exceptionally high and rapidly increasing rate of illness.”

In a notice on its website, Regina said 248 students were absent as of Wednesday, representing 23% of the PreK-12 student body. Illness rates varied by grade level, with approximately 9% of preschool students, 11% of elementary students and more than 40% of junior-senior high students absent.

“After consultation with Johnson County Public Health, we have decided to cancel classes to slow transmission, protect the health of students and staff, and allow for a deep cleaning of our facilities,” school officials said in the notice…
