Rio Rancho animal shelter emphasizes importance of senior pet adoptions

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) — A no-kill animal shelter based in Rio Rancho is hoping to remind New Mexicans of adoption options beyond just puppies and kittens. One strategy? A series of social media posts putting some of their oldest residents in the spotlight.

“Senior pets are typically the most overlooked in shelters,” said Watermelon Mountain Ranch Canine Manager Madison Pierce. “Most people are going to want young dogs, puppies, something that they’ll have a long time with. So we really like to do the ‘Senior Sunday’ posts to highlight our older guys and get them a better chance of finding a home since they typically get overlooked more often.”

Since late last year, Watermelon Mountain Ranch has made it a point to give a weekly social media shoutout to either an older cat or dog in their care. It’s called “Senior Sunday,” and it’s one of the ways the shelter contributes to their mission statement of “all who enter here will find love.”…
