Two charged after firearm brought to Venice High School

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – A 15-year-old girl was charged after bringing a firearm onto Venice High School’s campus this week, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

School officials said the school received a report Feb. 3 that a student had a weapon. Administrators, working with law enforcement, “responded immediately” and the weapon was “swiftly removed,” Venice High School Principal Zoltan Kerestely said in a message to families. He said students and staff were safe and there was no ongoing threat.

In a follow-up message dated Feb. 4, Kerestely called the incident “a serious safety incident” and said a failure to follow established protocols allowed a weapon to be brought onto school grounds. A subsequent investigation found a breach in protocol by members of the school support team…
