Loudoun County plans to begin enforcing its snow and ice removal ordinance this week as part of an effort to provide a safe environment for students who walk to school and to bus stops. Prior to the enforcement activity, Loudoun County officials encourage residents to continue to work together to bring neighborhoods into compliance with snow and ice removal requirements.
Loudoun County is supporting Loudoun County Public Schools’ focus on public sidewalks that are located within LCPS walk zones because clear public sidewalks are necessary to maintain students’ safety and separate them from vehicular traffic. In addition to focusing on sidewalks within walk zones, residents are encouraged to ensure sidewalks at LCSP bus stops within neighborhoods are also clear.
The Loudoun County ordinance, Chapter 1022.01, “Removal of Snow and Ice,” requires snow and ice removal on sidewalks on properties that are adjacent to public streets. The grace period allowed under the ordinance has expired. The ordinance allows for exemptions due to age or disability of the resident or property owner.
