Knox County bus contractor explains what goes into the decision to close schools when winter weather hits

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) — A Knox County school bus contractor said safety remains the top priority when determining whether roads are safe enough for student transportation during winter weather events.

Jake Sims, a school bus contractor for Knox County Schools, said he and four other contractors work closely with district officials to assess road conditions before making recommendations about school closures.

“We are technically independent contractors that Knox County Schools contracts out,” Sims said. “We buy the equipment, we hire the drivers and Knox County provides us with the routes and we transport the kids to and from.”…
