Memphis Teen Arrested in Walker Homes Shooting

A 17-year-old is now in custody in connection with a shooting inside the Walker Homes complex that left a 14-year-old girl seriously wounded, according to Memphis authorities. Investigators say the girl was shot in the neck inside a residence, then rushed to a hospital for treatment, and that officers later picked up the teen at a home in the 300 block of Elder Road, where they also recovered a suspected firearm during a consent search.

As reported by FOX13 Memphis, the Memphis SAFE Task Force said the juvenile was taken into custody on a warrant for attempted first-degree murder. Investigators told the station the shooting happened inside the Walker Homes complex and that the victim, a 14-year-old girl, remains hospitalized.

SAFE Task Force Credited With Teen’s Arrest

The arrest was credited to the Memphis SAFE Task Force, a multiagency operation that has been executing warrants and seizing illegal firearms across the city, according to a U.S. Marshals Service release. The operation has been credited with large numbers of arrests but has also drawn scrutiny for increasing strain on local jails and courts, the Associated Press reports.

Walker Homes: Neighborhood on Edge

Walker Homes has seen recent violence. An earlier January 29 shooting in the same complex left a woman critically injured, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in the development. Police are canvassing the area and have asked anyone with information or video to contact investigators.

What the Charges Mean
