Gov. Ivey sets execution window for man who did not pull the trigger in deadly 1991 auto store robbery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Gov. Kay Ivey announced Thursday that a timeframe has been set for the execution of Charles Lee “Sonny” Burton, who was convicted for his role as an accomplice in a 1991 auto store robbery that led to the shooting death of customer Doug Battle.

Gov. Ivey said a 30-hour time frame is scheduled to begin at 12 a.m. on Thursday, March 12, and will expire at 6 a.m. on March 13.

Burton was sentenced to death in 1992, though it was his accomplice, Derrick DeBruce, who shot and killed Battle during the incident.

DeBruce was originally sentenced to death but later resentenced to life imprisonment, leaving Burton the only man out the six involved in the robbery facing execution…
