RUTHER GLEN, Va. — Before sunrise, under a pale winter moon, a crowd gathered outside Wright’s Chapel United Methodist Church searching for peace.
Supporters arrived quietly in the cold, waiting for Buddhist monks participating in the national “Walk for Peace” to begin a brief morning prayer service in the church parking lot. For many, the early hour and freezing temperatures were a small sacrifice for a moment they believed would be deeply meaningful.
