Olympic champion Cathy Turner finds her happy place as Winter Games return

HILTON, N.Y. — Friday marks the moment of a lifetime for 3,000 athletes representing 90 countries as they take part in the opening ceremonies of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. One former Olympic gold medalist, a speed skating legend from the Rochester area, has had the date marked on her calendar for a while now.

A horse farm near Rochester is where Cathy Turner finds peace and quiet.

“I absolutely love it,” said Turner, a four-time Olympic medalist speed skater for Team U.S.A. “It’s like a happy place, talking to the horses. Sometimes I sing to them when no one’s around.”…
