18-Year-Old Man Shot and Killed by Police in Marion

One person is dead after being shot by a Marion police officer on Wednesday morning.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that, according to a press release from the Marion Police Department, officers were called to the 4100 block of Deer Valley Drive at around 7:43 am on Wednesday. An 18-year-old man had reportedly asked his neighbor to call the police so he could talk to them. Two officers arrived and spoke with the man, but after just a few minutes, he pulled out a machete and moved towards the officers, according to the Gazette.

The officers told the man to drop the weapon, and one officer deployed a taser. The Gazette reports the taser was not effective. The press release states that the man then approached the other officer while holding the machete. The officer backed away and continued to tell the man to drop the weapon.
