Dragon Trails Brings Life-Size Dragons To The Heard Museum This Spring

This spring, the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is adding a touch of fantasy to its scenic landscape with the debut of Dragon Trails, a seasonal exhibit that brings animatronic dragons to life along the museum’s wooded paths.

Known for immersive outdoor experiences that blend education and exploration, the Heard is expanding beyond dinosaurs and wildlife with a mythical twist that’s designed to spark imagination while staying rooted in natural science.

What To Expect On The Trail

Dragon Trails leads visitors along a half-mile outdoor path where life-sized dragons are tucked into the sanctuary’s natural setting. Some move, some roar, and all are designed to surprise guests as they make their way through the exhibit.

Along the route, families can explore how dragon myths connect to real animals, both extinct and living, while learning how different cultures across history imagined these legendary creatures. The experience balances visual excitement with educational storytelling, making it engaging for kids and adults alike.

A Sensory-Friendly Option

To make the exhibit accessible to more visitors, the Heard will host “Dragons Quiet” on the second Saturday of each month from 8 to 9 a.m. During this hour, the dragons remain still and silent, offering a calmer, sensory-friendly experience.

When To Go

Dragon Trails officially opens with a Grand Opening Celebration on March 14, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Reservations are required for opening day, including for museum members. The exhibit runs from March 15 through June 27, 2026, and is included with general admission. Regular museum hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

What To Know Before You Go

The Dragon Trail is approximately half a mile long and is now paved, making it easier for families to navigate. Jogging strollers with larger wheels are recommended, and closed-toe shoes are encouraged. Because the exhibit is outdoors, sunscreen and insect repellent are a good idea, especially on warmer days. Picnic areas are available for families who want to make a day of it…
