State officials: Haitians’ drivers licenses, state IDs may not be valid despite judge’s ruling

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — State officials said the state of Ohio is working to notify thousands of Haitians in Springfield and surrounding areas that their drivers licenses and state IDs may no longer be valid, despite a federal judge’s ruling on Tuesday extending the Temporary Protected Status designations.

Those sources said the ruling on TPS does not extend the expiration date for licenses and state IDs in Ohio because they are only valid for the initial period. TPS designations expired Feb. 3, and Haitians in the U.S. under TPS can’t renew their licenses until a formal end date is set by the federal government.

The state warns driving without a valid license is a misdemeanor. U.S. Code says that an alien convicted of 2 or more misdemeanors can lose their eligibility for temporary protected status…
