U.S. 17 and Main Road meeting provides look into quarterly project update

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — As updates continue for Charleston County’s progress on the U.S. 17 and Main Road project, it has left some local residents with sleepless nights and the sound of construction that continues to linger.

“I hope the public knows that we’re doing our best to make this as least impactful to them every day that we can,” engineering manager at Charleston County Public Works Herbert Nimz said.

This project was funded by the 2016 transportation sales tax and includes directional interchange flyover off ramps from the north and southbound directions of U.S. 17 to Main Road, a Main Road spur bridge overpassing U.S. 17, roadway widening throughout the corridor, a roundabout at Main and River Roads, a network of bike and pedestrian connections and stormwater drainage updates.

Here’s where the project stands right now: Pile driving for the ramps is about 45% complete, meaning that the loud banging noise residents have been hearing is less than halfway done, but will stop overnight, and hopes to be finished by April…
