A mass shooting that unfolded beneath one of the city’s most famed landmarks, the Chicago Theatre marquee, injuring seven juveniles after the annual holiday tree lighting ceremony on November 21, was caught on tape, prosecutors said Thursday. The revelation was one of many details provided in the detention hearing for Damaurion Cherry, the 17-year-old accused of carrying out the shooting and then robbing a man at gunpoint on the South Side 90 minutes later.
Chicago police officers arrested Cherry on Wednesday after he was discharged from a hospital where he had been being treated since being shot on January 21.
The shooting occurred at 9:51 p.m. at 175 North State Street and was captured on surveillance cameras affixed to the Chicago Theatre marquee, Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Pekara said.
