‘Ice missiles’: Flying ice shatters windshields across DMV

WASHINGTON (7News) — With temperatures hovering near freezing and more snow possible this weekend, drivers across the region are being warned about a growing danger on the roads: flying ice.

Body shops and personal injury attorneys tell 7News they’re seeing a surge in calls from drivers whose windshields were shattered by chunks of ice that flew off other vehicles — incidents some are now calling “ice missiles.”

Photos from this week show the damage left behind, including multiple vehicles struck and a rollover crash reported in Howard County.

While nearby states like Pennsylvania and New Jersey have laws that specifically require drivers to clear snow and ice from their vehicles, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. do not currently have laws that explicitly mandate complete ice removal…
