The North Carolina Department of Transportation has awarded a $4.7 million contract to the Fred Smith Co. for roadway improvements in Wake County. The project is expected to cover more than 22 miles of primary and secondary roads.
According to the N.C. Department of Transportation, the project includes milling, resurfacing, and shoulder reconstruction across five sections of primary roads and 26 sections of secondary roads. Construction is expected to begin in the spring and conclude by late fall 2027.
The project includes improvements to several primary roadways in Wake County. Planned work will take place on N.C. 96 (Zebulon Road) from U.S. 401 to N.C. 98 and from Skeet Drive to U.S. 401, as well as on Capital Boulevard (U.S. 1) in both directions between Thornton Road and Jacqueline Lane.
