Colbern Road reopens as Lee’s Summit’s largest infrastructure investment

After more than two years of phased construction, detours and disruption, Colbern Road is open again, finally revealing what city officials are calling the largest single capital infrastructure investment in Lee’s Summit, Mo.’s, history.

The $30 million Colbern Road Improvements Project, which spans from Northeast Douglas Street to Northwest Blue Parkway, officially reopened this fall following construction that began in September 2023. For residents, commuters and businesses that rely on the corridor, the reopening marks the end of a long wait, and the beginning of a more modern roadway designed to support the city’s continued growth.

“This unimproved road was annexed into the city more than a decade ago, and there were significant safety and capacity concerns,” said Michael Park, director of public works for the city of Lee’s Summit. “The project has addressed those concerns, and the improvements have unlocked exciting economic development opportunities for the city.”…
