Farmers say higher yields from genetics fuel surplus; new markets like E-15 needed

The 2025 harvest marked a milestone for corn production, but for many farmers these numbers came with a lot of uncertainty.

“I think as a nation we harvested right at 16.8 billion bushels,” Steve Swenka, a farmer and rancher in Johnson County said. “They’re already projecting the 2026 crop to be over 17 billion bushels.”

All of that corn has to find a buyer and right now it doesn’t seem like demand is keeping up…
