Will DeWine’s tax warning backfire? An income tax threat is exactly what property tax rebels want

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine may have handed a gift to the property tax abolition movement with his warning about potential tax increases if voters eliminate property taxes this November, say the hosts of Today in Ohio.

In attempting to dissuade voters from supporting the ballot initiative, DeWine inadvertently spotlighted exactly why many Ohioans support the measure in the first place. DeWine suggested that abolishing property taxes could force sales taxes to jump to a staggering 20 percent or require significant income tax increases.

But those working to kill property taxes are angry because lawmakers have repeatedly cut income taxes, especially for the wealthy, and put the tax burden more on homeowners. Shifting the burden back to the wealthy by removing the income tax cuts is what they hope for…
