BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — The man accused of shooting and killing Blount County Sheriff’s Deputy Greg McCowan has been indicted by a grand jury for a second time.
Blount County District Attorney Ryan Desmond confirms that Kenneth DeHart Jr. was indicted on 21 counts, including first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. He is accused of shooting and killing Blount County Deputy Greg McCowan and shooting and injuring Deputy Shelby Eggers during a February 2024 traffic stop.

This is the second time he has been indicted in relation to this case. Following the first indictment, a judge ordered him to be granted a second preliminary hearing after his legal team filed a motion saying he was denied his right to counsel in the initial preliminary hearing. The second preliminary hearing took place on Nov. 25, 2025 and the case was bound over to the grand jury.
