NAPLES, Fla. — Artificial intelligence is being used at NCH to enhance colonoscopy procedures, helping doctors detect polyps and other abnormalities more effectively. Colonoscopy is the gold standard for finding and removing polyps before they become deadly, and now the GI Genius system is providing an extra set of eyes during the procedure.
Dr. Kunal Suryawala, a gastroenterologist at NCH, said, “We insert [a flexible scope and camera] into the colon to look for any and all abnormalities. We’re looking for polyps to inflammation, to cancer, and it’s a direct visualization.”
The GI Genius system processes images frame by frame to identify abnormal lesions or areas, highlighting them for the doctor. “Sometimes polyps can be very small… and it does a really good job at pinpointing those areas of concern,” Suryawala said…
