Alabama bills target felony charges for eluding police

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — New legislation aimed at cracking down on drivers who flee from law enforcement is advancing through the Alabama State House and Senate, with support from Governor Kay Ivey and local law enforcement leaders.

House Bill 37 and Senate Bill 233 would make eluding a police officer a felony in Alabama, raising the offense from its current misdemeanor status. The bills would also establish mandatory minimum sentences for repeat offenders and cases involving higher risk, such as fleeing with children in the vehicle or striking a police officer’s car.
