Rockford unveils months-long events for America’s 250th anniversary

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford and Winnebago County officials have announced a months-long slate of events to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, as part of an effort that focuses on history, service, education, and civic pride.

Planning for the celebration is being undertaken by a network of community-based committees focused on youth engagement, culture, and entertainment, education, and volunteerism.

“America’s 250th anniversary is a powerful moment for Rockford, an opportunity tocome together as neighbors, honor the ideals that shaped our nation, and showcase thestrength and spirit of our community. From youth-centered events to performances andFourth of July traditions, we’re building a celebration that reflects who we are today andthe future we’re creating together,” said Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara.

Lineup of spring and summer events

Several anchor events have already been scheduled across the community, including:

  • April 22 — A Community‑Wide Cleanup Day where residents can volunteer to beautify neighborhoods as part of the anniversary observance.
  • May 8 — The Rockford Symphony Orchestra will host its annual Youth Concert Student Matinee, highlighting American‑themed orchestral works and offering students an opportunity to experience live performance.
  • June 27 — Veterans Memorial Hall will hold an immersive 1776‑themed evening with dinner, storytelling and interactive discussions tied to the nation’s founding.
  • July 2 — Rock Valley College will present a concert performance of 1776 at the Starlight Theatre.
  • July 4 — Rockford’s traditional Independence Day parade and fireworks will continue downtown.
  • July 10 — Rockford City Market will host “Hometown Heroes,” a celebration focused on volunteerism that includes a donation drive and packing of blessing bags for community members in need.

Officials say additional events will be announced throughout the year. Local organizations will soon be able to apply for support through a new “Celebration Event” application, which will offer funding for programs…
