Springfield businesses feel strain as city prepares new Route 66 monument

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Springfield is moving forward with plans to install a new Route 66 monument — a 20‑foot illuminated crown called Queen’s Gate 66 — but nearby businesses say construction and road closures are already taking a toll.

The monument, funded through a one million dollar state allocation, is being built near St. Louis Street and Glenstone Avenue. Business owner Travis McDonald said he supports the project but acknowledges the construction has created challenges.

“I think the monument will be a great thing because a lot of people have traveled Route 66,” McDonald said. “The construction that’s going on is causing a lot of dirt and maybe some hurt in the businesses.”…
