ASD calls special meeting as $90M deficit threatens sweeping cuts

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The Anchorage School Board will hold a special meeting Monday as the district grapples with a $90 million budget deficit that officials warn could impact core academic programs, student services, sports and staff.

The board is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Anchorage School District Education Center, to consider a resolution directing district administration to identify potential school consolidations and operational efficiencies. The district said the goal would be to use short-term savings to restore some proposed cuts to programs.
