The mother of a teenage bicyclist killed in a hit-and-run crash says she is struggling to understand how the woman convicted in her son’s death could be released from prison years earlier than expected.
Kellie Montalvo’s son, Benjamin, was riding his bike with friends near Centennial High School in Corona in July 2020 when he was struck and killed in a shared bike lane. The driver, Neomi Velado, fled the scene but later turned herself in to authorities.
Velado was eventually convicted of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and felony hit-and-run. She was sentenced to nine years in state prison…
