A San Diego woman has admitted to stabbing two men in Ocean Beach after a predawn confrontation near the neighborhood’s main drag, a violent alley attack that left both victims badly hurt and tied up the case in San Diego Superior Court for months.
Jana Nicole Halaska, 29, pleaded guilty on Jan. 14 to two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and is set to be sentenced on Feb. 17. Court records reviewed by the Times of San Diego state that the plea carries a presumptive state prison term of four to eight years. Prosecutors dropped an attempted murder charge that had been tied to one of the victims, and a judge rejected the defense’s bid for a mental health diversion program in December, according to those same records.
Predawn Stabbing Near Hodad’s Left Two Men Hospitalized
The violence broke out on April 13 at about 1:06 AM at Bacon Street and Newport Avenue, where Gabriel Millan and Christopher Abrahamsen were drinking and playing music in front of Hodad’s, according to court documents. The records say Halaska walked up, shouted, “That’s not how you treat a lady!” then pulled a knife and stabbed both men in an alley behind the restaurant. The two were rushed to a hospital and stayed there for many days.
Millan later told investigators he is “scarred for life” by the attack and eventually moved with his family to Oregon, the Times of San Diego reports.
Arrest, Charges and Detention
Police say surveillance footage and follow up investigative work led them to an apartment in Hillcrest, where officers arrested Halaska on April 29.
