Italy Skates to First Gold, Stunning Netherlands in Speedskating Upset
MILANO CORTINA – Italy has officially claimed its first gold medal of the Milano Cortina Games, thanks to a thrilling upset in women’s speedskating that saw the traditionally dominant Netherlands pushed off the podium in the 3000 meters for the first time since 2010.
Francesca Lollobrigida, celebrating her 35th birthday, delivered a record-breaking performance, clocking in at 3 minutes, 54.28 seconds. This remarkable time shaved more than two-and-a-half seconds off the previous Olympic record, held by Dutch legend Irene Schouten from the Beijing Games four years prior. Lollobrigida’s victory also placed her a full two seconds ahead of silver medalist Ragne Wiklund of Norway, with Canada’s Valerie Maltais securing the bronze.
The reigning world champion in the 3000m, Dutch skater Joy Beune, finished just off the podium in fourth place. This marks a significant shift, as it’s the first time since the 2010 Vancouver Games that the Netherlands has not medaled in this event.
Lollobrigida, a native of Frascati-a charming hill town near Rome renowned for its white wine-comes from a family with a touch of celebrity. Her great aunt was the late Gina Lollobrigida, a celebrated actress of the 1950s and ’60s.
This gold medal marks a career highlight for Francesca Lollobrigida, in her fourth Olympic appearance. She previously earned two medals at the Beijing Games, taking home a silver in the 3,000 meters and a bronze in the mass start.
In other news from the event, American skater Greta Myers was a last-minute addition to Saturday’s race following the withdrawal of Czech skater Martina Sablikova. The 21-year-old Myers, who initially did not qualify, secured the first reserve quota spot based on her performance on the 2025-26 World Cup circuit. She finished in 20th place.
