When water damage strikes, response time matters

When winter loosens its grip and the snow begins to melt, many homeowners discover that cold weather has quietly damaged their basements.

Jim Rusk, owner of USA Waterproofing Inc. in Twinsburg, which specializes exclusively in residential basements, said spring is when the effects of winter’s freeze-and-thaw cycle become most visible.

“One of the most common things we see are cracks in the foundation, cracks in the floor and cracks in the walls,” Rusk said. “Water gets into those cracks, it freezes, and every year that crack can get just a little bit bigger. Eventually, that lets water into the basement.”…
