Grand Bay Middle School student to represent Mobile at state spelling bee

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A Grand Bay Middle School student bested 51 others to take home the title of best speller in Mobile County, according to 68 Ventures Bowl officials.

Carson Floyd was one of 52 elementary and middle school students from public, private and parochial schools competing in the 99th Annual Mobile County Spelling Bee Friday morning in the Mary G. Montgomery High School auditorium.

He spelled “Norovirus” to win the bee. Baileigh Mosley Stokes from Council Traditional School came in second, followed by Aaryan Sharma from Denton Magnet School of Technology. The three made it through 180 words in 17 rounds.

Carson will now move on to the state spelling bee in Birmingham, set for Saturday, March 21, at the UAB College of Arts and Sciences Hall auditorium. The winner of that competition will represent Alabama at the Scripps National Spelling Bee…
