SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — After the original vendor for Syracuse’s license plate reader cameras fell into controversy over a data leak, police are urging city lawmakers to accept an alternative.
Syracuse Deputy Police Chief Richard Trudell and city attorneys tried to persuade councilors that license plate reader cameras from Axon Enterprises would secure its data from any purpose other than investigating crimes within Syracuse. If the Common Council votes in favor of the Axon cameras, they would replace the Flock cameras that fell into disgrace after its database shared info from its footage with its other clients.
Those include federal agents from ICE, who have enacted deportation raids across the country, including in Syracuse. (Flock has insisted that the data is safe and denies that it colludes with ICE.)
The council meets next Monday at City Hall to vote on both the severing of the Flock cameras and the switch to Axon cameras…
