Coast Guard gives insight into investigation on ferry grounding at Bald Head Island

BALD HEAD ISLAND, N.C. (WECT) – The Coast Guard is investigating after a ferry ran aground and got stuck at Bald Head Island Thursday morning.

“The Patriot” operated by Bald Head Island Transportation, became stuck with 105 passengers on board. Ferry officials say a cable wrapped around a propeller could be to blame for the grounding. No one was injured in the incident, and the ferry was removed from the channel Friday morning.

Coast Guard investigators arrived on scene hours after the grounding occurred. The agency investigates any incident involving a commercial vessel. In 2025 alone, the Coast Guard investigated 102 incidents across North Carolina…
