Starting on Monday, Feb. 2, all Lawrence University campus buildings transitioned to ID keycard access only. The reasons for the change are twofold: in response to the uptick of vandalism across campus, as well as growing concerns surrounding the increased presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at universities across the country.
In an email sent to the student body last Thursday, Jan. 26, Vice President of Student Life Chris Clarke explained that this decision was a joint effort by the administration, in cooperation with LUCC and the Faculty Committee on University Governance, to foster an environment in which students feel safe and supported. The policy reaffirmed that all campus buildings are private property, and as such, any ICE or law enforcement activity must take place with the presence of a valid judicial warrant. All students and employees of Lawrence University were instructed to not provide access to any person that does not have the express permission of the university to be there. Because athletic events and musical performances are open to the public, additional Campus Safety personnel will be present at those times to ensure the safety of the student body. This decision was not made lightly and reflected Lawrence’s commitment to the wellbeing of the campus community.
“These conversations included assessing campus needs, considering the nuances of our physical spaces, and determining how best to enhance security while staying true to Lawrence University’s mission and values,” Clarke told The Lawrentian. “We also remained attentive to the student experience and to the ways our campus welcomes the greater Fox Cities community, returning alumni, visiting guests, and prospective families.”…
