As Sakai distances himself from Project Marvel, Nirenberg pushes back

The sun was setting behind the Frost Bank Center. You could see it from the window of a nearby community center where the two Democratic candidates for Bexar County judge debated Friday night.

The arena — and the plan for the East Side grounds and neighborhoods around it after the San Antonio Spurs move to downtown — turned into one of the night’s biggest fights between former Mayor Ron Nirenberg and County Judge Peter Sakai.

“I do not support Project Marvel. It will do nothing for the East Side,” Sakai said, referring to the city of San Antonio’s plan for a sprawling downtown entertainment district with a Spurs arena at its center…
