GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A community history project that has erected statues of Gerald Ford, Rosa Parks, Jay Van Andel and other influential Grand Rapids figures has relaunched and is working to bring two new installations to the city.
The Grand Rapids Community Legends Project, launched in 2008 by the late philanthropist and former U.S. Ambassador to Italy Peter Secchia, is commissioning a statue of the Council of Three Fires, an alliance of three Native American tribes.
The seven-foot statue is expected to be installed this fall near McKay Tower, at the corner of Pearl Street and Monroe Center Street in downtown Grand Rapids, said Secchia’s son Mark, who is now leading the Community Legends project…
