Fallen tree cuts power, damages homes during Triad windstorm

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Strong winds moving through the Triad early Saturday morning knocked out power for thousands and caused significant damage in at least one Winston-Salem neighborhood.

Just after 6 a.m., a nearly 90-foot pine tree fell onto power lines in Winston-Salem, sending a bright flash through the neighborhood and cutting power immediately, according to homeowner Truett Williams.

“About 6:15, I heard something just hit the ground,” Williams said. “It was too dark to see what had happened, and then we also had a big bright, like lightning struck. It just lit up the whole area.”…
