A 53-year-old man was struck and killed Friday night on a busy roadway in Leesburg.
Michael Anthony of Leesburg was struck at about 7 p.m. by a white 2016 van which was traveling southbound on U.S. Hwy. 27 at County Road 48, according to a press release from the Leesburg Police Department. He had been crossing the roadway when he was hit by the van, driven by 50-year-old Ryan Surjan from Orlando.
Anthony died at the scene of the crash, despite life-saving efforts by Lake County Fire Rescue. The Medical Examiner was at the scene as well as law enforcement.
A witness at the nearby Speedway gas station, told a Leesburg-News.com reporter that the man had gone into the roadway to pick up something, apparently concerned it could impede traffic or damage someone’s car.
