Greg Brown, founding guitarist of Cake and writer of ‘The Distance,’ dies

Greg Brown, a founding guitarist of the Sacramento band Cake whose restrained, rhythmic playing helped define the group’s early sound and whose song “The Distance” became one of alternative rock’s most enduring hits, has died.

Cake confirmed Brown’s death in a statement posted on the band’s official Facebook page Saturday, Feb. 7. No age was given.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Greg Brown’s passing after a brief illness,” the band wrote. “Greg was an integral part of Cake’s early sound and development. His creative contributions were immense, and his presence—both musical and personal—will be deeply missed. Godspeed, Greg.”…
