$290M from U.S. Forest Service to fund Pisgah, Nantahala recovery

HENDERSONVILLE – $290 million from the U.S. Forest Service will go towards Tropical Storm Helene recovery in North Carolina’s national forests over 10 years.

Under a congressionally approved power called the Good Neighbor Authority, the Forest Service is essentially funding and deputizing the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission to do recovery work in Pisgah and Nantahala national forests.

That will include removing storm debris, repairing roads and recreation areas, managing invasive species and restoring watersheds and wildlife habitat, according to a Feb. 5 news release…
