Nearly $11.7M revamp of Auburn Street in west Rockford goes forward this spring

ROCKFORD — A nearly 2-mile stretch of Auburn Street on the city’s west side will be revamped this summer with new underground infrastructure and new surfaces for driving, walking and bicycling.

City Council has awarded an $11.69 million contract to N-Trak Group of Loves Park to rebuild the road from just west of the Auburn and Main streets roundabout to Central Avenue. The funding comes from a budget surplus that the city allocated in December 2023 to several initiatives, including this road repair. It’s the first phase of two years of work on the roadway.

Construction involves removing and replacing the existing roadway, curb and gutter replacement, new traffic signal infrastructure, new sidewalk, drainage improvements and a multiuse path. The city will replace water mains and all lead service lines underground…
