‘This has knocked the sails right out of me.’ Spokane woman hit with financial hardship after being wrongfully declared dead

SPOKANE, Wash. — According to the Social Security Administration, approximately three million deaths are reported to them annually. They state ‘less than one-third of 1 percent are erroneously reported deaths that need to be corrected.’ A Spokane woman says she found herself among that stat. She says the financial damage to her because of that error has been devastating.

“I was reported deceased by the social security office,” Lorrie Esposito said. “It was then put on a public notice called the ‘DMF,’ otherwise known as the death master file. When I proved to them that I was not dead, they just said ‘sorry’.”
