On Jan. 20, Juan Flores, a resident of Sparks, appeared for sentencing on the charge of evading, eluding or failing to stop on signal of peace officer endangering other persons or property, a category B felony. The defendant was convicted of refusing to stop for Carson City Sheriff’s deputies while they displayed their lights and sirens; instead, the defendant ran a red light and fled. The Carson City District Attorney’s Office argued for a sentence of 24 months to 60 months in the Nevada Department of Corrections; however, the court ultimately sentenced him to 18 months to 48 months in the Nevada Department of Corrections.
On Jan. 13, Thomas Kelly, a Carson City resident, appeared for sentencing on the charge of battery resulting in substantial bodily harm, a category C felony. The defendant was convicted of striking his significant other in the face causing a broken nose and strangling them. The Carson City District Attorney’s Office argued for a sentence of 19 months to 48 months in the Nevada Department of Corrections; however, the court sentenced the defendant to not more than five years of probation with a suspended sentence of 24 months to 60 months.
