IRONDALE, Ala. (TRIBUNE) — After days of stories inaccurately labeling Irondale a sanctuary city, Mayor James D. Stewart Jr. sat down with The Trussville Tribune for a detailed discussion to clarify a few misinterpreted statements.
The stories triggered a social media firestorm that included condemnations from sitting U.S. Senator and gubernatorial candidate Tommy Tuberville, Attorney General candidate Katherine Robertson, and U.S. Senate candidate Jared Hudson. According to city officials, Tuberville, Robertson and Hudson never reached out to the Mayor to discuss the allegations. The Tuberville campaign has not responded to a message left on Friday.
“Number one, Irondale is not a sanctuary city,” Stewart said. “Number two, Irondale can’t be a sanctuary city. The state legislature passed the law that said it is unlawful to create a sanctuary city in the state of Alabama. I never used the term. I said the city would not assist ICE with raids and that all residents have access to public safety services,” Stewart added…
