Measles cases surge in Texas as local vaccination rates lag, health officials warn

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Health officials are warning that a resurgence of measles nationwide could soon have local consequences in the Coastal Bend, as vaccination rates among young children lag behind recommended levels.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 2,200 measles cases in the United States last year, including more than 800 in Texas alone — the highest total of any state and more than one-third of cases nationwide.

Measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, meaning the virus was no longer spreading continuously within the country. But federal health officials say the disease has now entered its 13th straight month of transmission…
