JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – After our 3 On Your Side investigation, Paying Through the Tap, exposed shocking water bill increases at Canton Municipal Utilities (CMU), state lawmakers are moving forward with legislation designed to prevent similar crises across Mississippi.
The two bills, introduced by state Sen. Bart Williams, would establish the first statewide framework for overseeing rural water systems and protecting consumers from unexpected rate spikes.
“If they are moving in a direction where there is a substantial rate increase coming because of inadequacy, we deal with it now beforehand,” Williams said. “There’s always been a lot of governmental financial assistance to help associations, and I hope they will continue to be there in the future so that rates can be kept to a very minimum.”…
