Words exchanged, car kicked before man accused of assaulting girl at Buda student walk-out

AUSTIN (KXAN) — An affidavit revealed new details about what led a man to leave his car and end up in a fight with a group of juveniles during a student-led walkout protest in Buda last week. The students were protesting Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, on Monday, Feb. 2 when an argument escalated to physical violence, according to the Buda Police Department.

The agency shared video of the seemingly chaotic scene in a social media post. The next day, Buda PD officers arrested Chad Watts, 45. He faced an assault causing bodily injury charge.

Buda police were first notified that a fight involving students from Moe and Gene Johnson High School near RM 967 and FM 1626 around 3 p.m.

In an affidavit released by Buda police, officers said Watts was driving south on FM 1626, stopped at a red light at RM 967. The affidavit said Watts and a group of students began arguing and a girl kicked the side of Watts’ vehicle.

The vehicle wasn’t damaged, according to police. The girl returned to a group of students nearby, and Watts got out of his car and came up to her. The girl, referred to as “Victim 1” in the affidavit, swatted at his arm as he got closer and reached out to her…
