ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A new way to crack down on illegal parking is coming to Albuquerque, as the city unveils an automated ticketing system device. The solar-paneled SafetyStick is a new device that’s been installed around Albuquerque in no-parking zones. The city said that when a car parks at one of the locations for more than 90 seconds, the device will take a picture of the license plate, and they’ll receive a ticket in the mail. “In some areas we see repeat offenders, and people who refuse to acknowledge red or yellow curbing,” Albuquerque General Services Department Director Nathan Martinez said.

The no-parking zones include yellow curbs, red curbs, and bike lanes. These could be school zones, crosswalks, and bus stops in high-use areas. “Folks from Vision Zero who helped us identify some safety corridors, anecdotal evidence from parking who know where people are parking illegally the most,” Dan Mayfield said with the City of Albuquerque.
The violation will be reviewed by a human officer for accuracy before the ticket gets mailed to the driver’s address with a photo. There are 60 locations downtown and in the University District. But the city said they are prepared to expand if they see it’s working. “We have an agreement to up to 500,” Albuquerque Parking Division Manager Maria Griego said. “So we will be introducing them in phases and as we see fit.”…
